Step by step
  1. Close the door slowly and note where the latch hits the strike plate.

  2. If it's slightly off, file the strike plate opening larger with a metal file.

  3. If it's significantly off (door has settled/sagged), loosen the top hinge screws and add a shim.

  4. Adjust the strike plate position by re-drilling slightly if needed.

  5. Test the latch several times after adjustment.
