Step by step
  1. Identify whether the issue is loose tack strips or stretched-out carpet backing.

  2. A power stretcher is needed to properly re-tension carpet - rental available at home centers.

  3. Hook the stretcher's head near one wall and the tail near the opposite wall.

  4. Push the lever to stretch the carpet taut, then trim and re-tuck the edge.

  5. For large rooms or repeated wrinkling, hire a carpet installer.

Questions to ask your pro
  • What is the root cause of the buckling—improper installation, humidity changes, or subfloor movement?
  • Will you use a power stretcher rather than just a knee kicker to ensure a permanent fix?
  • Will you inspect and replace any tack strips that are damaged, rusted, or pulling away?
  • Is there any subfloor damage or moisture underneath that needs to be addressed before the re-stretch?
  • How long should a proper power stretch last before this happens again?
  • Do you guarantee the repair, and for how long?
