Step by step
Access the area from below (basement/crawlspace) if possible.
Look for gaps between the subfloor and joist, or signs of water damage/rot.
For a gap, apply construction adhesive and drive screws up through a cleat into the subfloor.
For soft/rotted sections, the damaged subfloor must be cut out and replaced - consider a pro.
From above, breakaway screws can pull down a squeaky spot without ceiling access.
Questions to ask your pro
- What is causing the issue—subfloor movement, failed fasteners, or joist damage?
- Will you access the area from below through the basement or crawlspace, or from above through the finished floor?
- If the subfloor is soft, is there rot, moisture damage, or mold present, and how extensive is it?
- If rot is found, should I call a mold or water remediation specialist before you proceed?
- Will this repair require removing and replacing any finished flooring above the affected area?
- What fasteners or adhesives do you use, and are they appropriate for subfloor applications?
