Step by step
Shut off water, flush to empty the tank, and disconnect the supply line.
Unbolt the toilet from the floor flange and lift it straight up onto a towel.
Scrape off the old wax ring completely from both the toilet and the flange.
Press a new wax ring onto the flange (or the toilet horn) evenly.
Reset the toilet, press down firmly to seat the wax, then bolt it down and reconnect water.
