Step by step
  1. Disconnect and drain all garden hoses.

  2. Shut off the interior shutoff valve for the outdoor spigot, if present.

  3. Open the outdoor spigot to drain remaining water, then leave it open.

  4. Install a foam spigot cover over the faucet for extra insulation.

  5. For spigots without an interior shutoff, install a frost-free hose bib.
